Sandy Hole is the solid reef that has stopped many ships dead in the water over the past 400 years. The buoyed dive site is at a depth of 6 to 33 feet (2 to 10 meters) between vertical coral reefs running along shore. Sandy Hole is used as a training spot for novice divers and as a spot for night diving. The site is very pretty with nice light, clean sand and shell debris. It is also accessible to snorkelers. The Sandy Hole buoyed dive site is adjacent to the sand hole containing the last evidence of the Virginia Merchant wreck site (see the Virginia Merchant wreck). Sandy Hole is a Bermuda Protected Area.
